Basic Formulas - Decimals and Fractions

Types of Fractions:


1) Proper Fractions: A fraction whose numerator is less than the denominator is known as a proper fraction. Example: 4/5

2) Improper Fractions: A fraction whose numerator is greater than the denominator is known as a proper fraction. Example: 5/4

3) Mixed Fractions: Fractions which consist of an integral part and a fractional part are known as mixed fractions. All improper fractions can be expressed as mixed fractions. Example: are mixed fractions.

Comparing Fractions:

Let us consider 2 fractions
To find out which fraction is a bigger one, multiply 'AD' and 'BC'.
If AD > BC , then
If AD < BC , then

Recurring Decimals:

A decimal in which a set of digits is repeated continually is called a recurring decimal.
Example: 1/3 = 0.33333333...
Example: 1/7 = 0.142857142857...
